Lou, a Chinese immigrant, raises his son, Jimmy, to study and work hard. When Lou finds young Jimmy playing street hockey, he expresses his disapproval. Many years later, an elderly Lou enters a hockey arena with a tray of Tim Hortons coffee. He heads into the stands, and hands a coffee to Jimmy – who is an adult now. Jimmy seems surprised to see his father there. Lou explains that he has come to see his grandson Tommy (Jimmy’s son) play hockey. It is soon revealed that Lou used to secretly watch his son play at the same arena years ago, and that he always enjoyed a Tim Hortons coffee while he watched. Lou and Jimmy share a moment, as they each enjoy a delicious Tim Hortons coffee and proudly watch Tommy play.
I cried buckets over this commercial. It's very heartwarming, truly moving - only a stoic, jaded mammal will not feel their heart being pinched.
I know tons of parents who tried to show their stern side, giving their kids some serious talk about being too engaged with their passion (some sports, some music, dance, etc) because mom or dad is scared that they won't do well in school but SECRETLY, was cheering them on. Call it, reverse-psychology. In most Asian descent and culture, this is very common.
In the ad, Dad was surprised that Lolo (grandpa) showed up for Tommy's game in the hockey arena. Somehow, insinuating that - lolo does not like hockey because dad was not encouraged by lolo to pursue his passion. Then, Dad asked Lolo - "which team did I play for?" Lolo pulled out his wallet, and there it is - a tattered, black and white photo of dad in his jersey and hockey stick. Dad didn't know that Lolo kept this all along. How truly touching!
Yes, our first fans will always be our families. And even if you think your mom or dad was not the least bit interested - they are, the first ones to tell the whole world about how proud they truly are - about you.
