It was Friday and there are lots of people - mostly, those who are probably spending the weekend because of the Wine Festival slated starting that Saturday. And that's precisely why we can't stay another night. :( Harbour House is filled to the rafters for the whole weekend!
Breakfast was outstanding! Fresh beverages (tea, coffee, OJ, cranberry, apple, etc), hot dish of ham and egg, continental breakie that includes cereals - oats, corn flakes, varieties of cheese, cold cuts, croissants, danish pastries, NOTL's Greaves jams, etc. It's a lot of food and better - they all are soooooo good! :)
After our breakfast, we drove to Peller Estates for our winery tour. While waiting for our tour, there were two Japanese ladies who were asking the Manager on how to rent a bike. The poor Manager couldn't make out what the girls were saying as they were speaking in broken English. So, we approached them and asked if they needed a ride and where exactly they're going. Apparently, they wanted to visit the Strewn winery (known for their great wines and some culinary lessons on the side if you attend their tour) - they gals were overjoyed as they obviously can't rent a bike right in the middle of the vineyards!
Peller Estates is one of the biggest wine producer in the Niagara Peninsula. And we are just both thrilled to be in the tour as our reception wines were all Peller Estates (Reserve White and Red). There were probably 4 other pairs (aside from B&I and the Japanese girls), one pair was from Cali (and are Napa Valley loyalists) and two pairs are Quebecois. We tasted about 4 types of wines - a Souvignon Blanc, a Riesling, Pinot, and their award winning Icewine (something that is definitely Canadian!)The tour gave us a great appreciation of the wines. In fact, B did NOT break into hives as he usually gets - I guess, he just knows 'fine' drinks now! lol. We got the Sauvingnon Blanc and Dry Riesling (2004 Reserve) and even though we were really wanting to get the Icewine (B loved it!!!) - the gal selling it had to tell us not to get it as we can't bring it in the plane (even as a check in as it might explode.) :( So, I guess we'll have to get that next time - and not to bring it back to Calgary.
We drove the 2 gals to Strewn wineries and were very pleased. It was about 15 minutes drive (with no traffic!) - so you can just imagine that it was a bit 'far'. Next in our list is to try the local restaurant. Lunch was at Queen St and since that was to be our last day at NOTL, we thought about exploring the place on foot. We went around town visiting all the quaint stores - at some point, even meeting local artists (painters) whose artwork are being sold and autographed! B was lucky to have found one about hockey and it was signed right there too! :)
The place is magical. Charming is a word that does not lend justice to it... it's very pretty, serene and homey - and just beautiful. I guess, it also helped that it's Fall - you can see all the bright red colours of maple leaves amdist the backdrop of Lake Ontario and the perfect houses that surround it. It's touristy but not commercialized. That's the beauty of Niagara on the Lake.
At about 4pm, we headed back to change as we are scheduled to watch the musicale, High Society at the Shaw Festival Theatre. We were chaffeured to Shaw Festival because parking can be scarce. As it was raining, we thought of just having a bite to eat at the Theatre Lounge. At 8pm sharp, the doors to the play were opened. We had prime seats, Lower Box, Row N and was at the aisle too! YAY!!!! :)
We walked on our way back. It's probably just a good 8 minutes walk and again, the Harbour House staff was so accommodating - they bugged us to grab some chocolate chip cookies before we retire to bed. And of course, my husband happily obliged! :)
